Drift86 Review
This is a great concept for a game that with some polish and some additional features added, could become a very popular title. The core mechanics are extremely solid and make for a organically addicting experience, however the fact that there is no formal controller support detracts from its potential to be even better. Currently you can use a controller however the menus still require a mouse to navigate meaning you can’t comfortably play this from a couch. Additionally, adding in-game controller support with the option to remap the controls would allow for the acceleration and braking to be assigned to right and left triggers respectively, while the steering remains controlled by the x-axis of the left analogue stick as per the default setting. While the native control system can be rewarding (once you get the hang of it), the ability to remap the controls with an Xbox controller or similar game pad would allow for a greater depth of driving precision and enjoyment, without steering too far away from the arcade-like feel of the game.
Another small addition that would be a huge benefit would be the ability to turn off or mute the in-game music. As it stands, without this function I have to mute the game through Windows if I want to listen to Spotify while playing which also mutes the game sound effects, lowering immersion. ‘Free Mode’ or an endless mode would also be a great feature to add; somewhere players could hone their skills. Whether it was simply the same two levels without a lap limit & the ‘wrong way’ indicator or a separate garage area or closed course (think an open concrete ken block gymkana type thing with a few obstacles like sheds or shipping containers) would really encourage the natural feeling I have whenever I play this; that I simply want to screw around and drift without having to cycle through menus ever three to five laps.
Lastly, the one addition I think would be the most valuable to this game would be a map creator for players. If we could create our own maps like how players have done for Skater XL with an external mod manager or even Steam Workshop, the content would practically create itself, bolstering the game’s community and culture while in such an early stage of development.
