Endless Space 2

Endless Space 2

Endless Space 2 is a Strategic Space Opera, featuring the compelling “just one more turn” gameplay, set in the mysterious Endless universe. As the leader of your civilization, will you impose your vision and build the greatest stellar empire? Your story unfolds in a galaxy that was first colonized by God-like beings known as the “Endless”, who rose and fell eons ago. All that remains of them are mystical ruins, powerful artifacts, and a strange, near-magical substance known as Dust. As a leader, you have to manage your populations like never before as they react dynamically to your decisions and to their environment, expressing their will through political parties, dictating the laws that your Senate can pass. Will you be a beloved natural leader or will you manipulate your populations to your benefit? Watch your fighters fly past huge cruisers while lasers rip their hulls apart in epic real-time space battles. Detailed after action reports will help you adapt your strategy for the next confrontations. Design your ships, assemble your fleets and carefully adapt your battle plans to overcome your enemies. Once you think you’ve done it all, take it online against seven other players. Immerse yourself in the Endless Universe. The galaxy belongs to the civilization that controls Dust and uncovers its secrets… but were the Endless alone in the galaxy? What is the true origin of Dust? Lead one of eight civilizations, each with a unique playstyle affinity and story quest, and build great stellar empires capable of imposing your vision on the Galaxy! Find out more about the Academy and its powerful cast of Heroes, that you can recruit and train to become fleet admirals, system governors or influential senators. Press ‘Space’ anytime to activate the Amplified Reality view and reveal in-depth contextual information about your systems, trade routes, diplomatic stances and even your ship stats during battle!

Endless Space 2 Review

The gameplay is pretty repetitive, and most of the mechanics are very clearly winner/loser, without much in the way of reacting. If you go down a weaker research path or have bad luck on planets, you’re screwed. There’s even a few uncommon but necessary resources for ships or upgrading, and if you don’t get them, you’re just SOL. That combined with certain resources just providing waaaaaay better upgrade choices: you could have like slightly more approval or solar system defense vs… research, economic, or manufacturing bonuses. It’s pretty easy to tell which is better, but it’s locked to what you can access, via RNG. Some enemies will just have massive boosts to themselves which you don’t get, on top of cheating AI.

Maybe playing with/against more humans is interesting; I played with one friend and extermal voice chat. Games can last 20-30 hours. Not as long as some other 4X games I’ve played, but still can take a while. Depending on the gameplay mechanics you’re emphasizing, that can also take a LOT of time. There’s paths you can take to get bonuses from a greater variety of citizens on planets, but this heavily depends on getting the necessary subcitizens, sending them to other planets, and removing existing citizens from intended planets. If this mechanic was easier to manage (why not have a “desired” citizen distribution manager, or at least steer reproduction/growth more effectively?) turns could be a lot shorter. Some of the other mechanics are super annoying (interplanetary vines that can just eat your planets if you’re not militarily berzerking) or unfeasible (Craver stuff).

Summary
Any way you look at it, Endless Space 2 is one impressive achievement even taking into account the above paragraph of what are fairly minor gripes given how much this game does extremely well. 4X space sims have long been known as the territory of the serious strategy gamer, but Amplitude has broken away from the pack here. Outstanding depth and tactical challenge have been preserved, although not at the expense of the strong storytelling needed to emphasize the sense of awe and wonder in galactic exploration that’s always been a huge part of the genre’s appeal. Amplitude has done a masterful job combining these two elements into a single game, where the quests and strategy and politics and economy are all tied into a whole much greater than the sum of its parts.
Good
