Enter the Gungeon

Enter the Gungeon

Enter the Gungeon is a bullet hell dungeon crawler following a band of misfits seeking to shoot, loot, dodge roll and table-flip their way to personal absolution by reaching the legendary Gungeon’s ultimate treasure: the gun that can kill the past. Select a hero [or team up in co-op] and battle your way to the bottom of the Gungeon by surviving a challenging and evolving series of floors filled with the dangerously adorable Gundead and fearsome Gungeon bosses armed to the teeth. Gather precious loot, discover hidden secrets, and chat with opportunistic merchants and shopkeepers to purchase powerful items to gain an edge. The Gungeon: Enter the Gungeon – a constantly evolving bullet hell fortress that elegantly blends meticulously hand-designed rooms within a procedurally-generated labyrinth bent on destroying all that enter its walls. But beware – the Gungeon responds to even the most modest victory against its sentries and traps by raising the stakes and the challenges found within! The Cult of the Gundead: The Gungeon isn’t just traps and chasms – calm your nerves and steady your aim as you face down the gun-totting Cult of the Gundead. These disciples of the gun will stop at nothing to put down the heroes in their tracks and employ any tactics necessary to defend their temple.

Enter the Gungeon

Enter the Gungeon is all about bullets and guns and shooting stuff. No really, it’s all about that – to a hilarious degree. The story revolves around a giant uber-bullet that falls from the sky, shell casings and primer rims are worked into the otherwise-standard environmental art at every opportunity, and many of your enemies themselves are (you guessed it) actual bullets who fire what I suppose are their little cousins out of the guns they hold with stubby, T-Rex-like hands. This mix of goofy fetishism is immediately disarming, setting a unique, charming tone right away.

The minions who fill the halls of the Gungeon are no less varied. From floating iron maidens that spew bullets that try to hit you coming and going to finger-wiggling bullet wizards who project astral copies of themselves to attack you around walls or behind cover, the enemy variety ramps up nicely as you go from level to level, providing an ever-shifting set of challenges to meet as you progress.

Visually, Enter the Gungeon is stunning. Care has been placed in the smallest details, mixing its retro-inspired pixelated artwork with more contemporary styles of visual feedback. There’s tremendous impact to each of the on-screen actions. Books burst into clouds of loose pages when shot or kicked, explosions rattle rooms, and a generous color palette creates an interesting gothic fantasy/cartoon fusion that aligns with the game’s darkly humorous tone. When coupled with a pulsing, energetic soundtrack, Enter the Gungeon is an audiovisual treat.

Its flaws elsewhere are all the more disappointing. So much care is apparent in its construction, but in its attempt to merge multiple genres and styles together, Enter the Gungeon’s most important elements–namely its roguelike flavors and massive offering of distinct weapons–don’t gel. It’s a game at odds with itself.

Summary
Enter the Gungeon’s design is quite sophisticated for a game about shooting bullets at anthropomorphized bullets with guns; it uses elements of one genre in the context of another, enhancing its most enjoyable elements. Despite there being so many more moving parts than in a typical arcade shooter, it somehow feels more immediate and focused on getting you into the action and keeping you there.
Good
  • Finely-tuned shooting mechanics
  • Enemies test your reflexes
  • Plenty of creative weapons and items
Bad
  • Gameplay doesn’t merge ideas well
