Throughout the game, the player directly controls the on-screen character from a third-person perspective to interact with people, objects, and enemies. Unlike previous games in the series, the player can also control the camera with the right analog stick, allowing for a 360° view of the surroundings. While in towns and cities, the player may only see from the perspective of Vaan, but any character may be controlled in the field. The world of Final Fantasy XII is rendered to scale relative to the characters in it; instead of a caricature of the character roaming around miniature terrain, as found in the earlier Final Fantasy games, every area is represented proportionally. The player navigates the overworld on foot, Chocobo, or by airship. Players may save their game to a memory card using save crystals or gate crystals, and may use the latter to teleport between gate crystals. An in-game bestiary provides incidental information about the world of Final Fantasy XII.
Final Fantasy 12 Review
This is a very high quality remaster. The textures, shading, and all that have been updated significantly. If you are new to Final Fantasy series, I highly recommend this as a starting point. It’s quite user friendly. It meets at a nice middle ground between turn-based classics and modern action RPGs, while slightly favoring the former in terms of overall mechanics.
Story: Linear, but long and with very solid worldbuilding and character design. It is mature, eloquently spoken (sometimes a bit esoteric but this is typical for the territory) and rich with detail, but not convoluted. Every character in the party has an arc that is closely connected with the main plot, which serves to make their arcs satisfying to observe and the payoffs are emotionally gratifying. This is further aided by the higher polygon faces/hair/eyes which make their expressions “emote” more like modern games. There a few distinct main themes that are coherently expressed through the characters in their journey which connects with the player if you are watching for them.
Gameplay: The areas are small compared to modern games so loading screens will be often, but they are short. The environments still create a sense of scale and have a very distinct artistic flavor that actually outshines many modern RPGS. The mechanics are straightforward and satisfying. Some puzzles or maze-like areas may require a guide for some players, as there is sometimes little or no hint for what you do next, so be warned. It is generally agreed by many players that this game is very difficult to figure out what to do next in certain sections.
These are the essential things you need to know before buying. It is an excellent port, no issues with crashes or controller/keyboard and mouse support. Anyone who loves RPGs should definitely get this game, if not for its lack of narrative choices but rather its excellent story and artistically rich worlds, along with solid gameplay.
