Hell is Other Demons Review
Hell is Other Demons has all of the features that make a great arcade shooter – combine that with an awesome aesthetic, and you have one of the better games in this genre. You can choose between 2 game modes. The arcade mode works like a simple arena roguelite where you can grind points for the leaderboard. After each stage, you can pick between different upgrades, additionally to finding new weapons during the level. The campaign is a little different. In the story mode, you can explore a small map with road forks, buy upgrades, and fight bosses. There are a few annoying bugs that don’t affect the game too much. I had most of the achievements unlocked for some reason, also the ‘alt+tab’ command is temporarily locking my screen (I am sure it will be fixed soon). The game settings are pretty good, you can remap controller and even change the color palette. It’s very similar to Gunlock in gameplay and format, but with a lot more content and mechanics.
The soundtrack and visuals are pretty good (just getting it out of the way), although it’s a little difficult to tell what is going on due to blinding effects. There are several arena themes with different types of enemies, and some of the stages even have unique features like traps. For the most part, the gameplay and mobility tools are relatively responsive, I just wish I didn’t pick up weapons automatically. You can do most of the generic platforming moves like double-jump, dashing, hovering and head stumping which gives the game dynamic gameplay. There are plenty of unique weapons and upgrades, additionally to a few special attacks. I have not played the arena that much, but I think it has a good loop for those that like high-scores, and the story provides enough content if you just want some skill progression.
What can I say, it’s just a really good game all around. It has plenty of content to justify the price. You can wait for a few patches until those achievement bugs are gone, not a big problem for me.
