Ratropolis Review

I was honestly hooked on this game since I saw a youtuber, Wanderbots, play the demo. I immediately grabbed it and started playing it myself, trying to unlock all the cards in the demo, surprising my roommate a little considering.. well, it was still the demo. Imagine my surprise when I saw it hit early Access here on steam. Bought it immediately, and just like the demo I’m not disappointed in the slightest. Lets get to an actual review though, shall we?

Exactly what it says in the description, think Kingdom New Age but with cards, a lot easier to manage in my opinion while still being fast paced once the game gets going, deciding whether to add cards, remove them, what cards to take, etc. Managing economy and your military all while watching that ever dwindling supply of gold and ratizens (peasants/workers) slowly dip down if you aren’t careful. I’ve only made it to round 22 currently. You can brute force if you get the right military units, but it isn’t as effective later, if you don’t build with a plan.

Currently there’s 4 Leaders each with their own passives and actives. Later to be 6, according to borders in game. Merchant, General, Builder, and Scientist, each showing their own take on balancing the previously mentioned resources, and each with 3 ‘packs’ of cards to unlock as you play. Adding the cards to the deck of all of the leaders.

It’s early access, yes, but so far.. if you like card based games, games like kingdom, or like managing a base you’re building up, I’d heavily recommend this to be honest, or try the demo if you’re on the fence. It’s a game about experimenting and finding ways around the rng of what cards you get, even with ‘bad cards’ if you think things out you can usually make something of it. Anyway, I hope this is a decent enough view of what I see, thank you for reading, and I hope you enjoy the game.
