Resident Evil 5
The Umbrella Corporation and its crop of lethal viruses have been destroyed and contained. But a new, more dangerous threat has emerged. Years after surviving the events in Raccoon City, Chris Redfield has been fighting the scourge of bio-organic weapons all over the world. Now a member of the Bioterrorism Security Assessment Alliance (BSAA), Chris is sent to Africa to investigate a biological agent that is transforming the populace into aggressive and disturbing creatures. Joined by another local BSAA agent, Sheva Alomar, the two must work together to solve the truth behind the disturbing turn of events.
Resident Evil 5 is a third-person shooter with an over-the-shoulder perspective. Players can use several weapons including handguns, shotguns, automatic rifles, sniper rifles, and grenade launchers, as well as melee attacks. Players can make quick 180-degree turns to evade enemies. The game involves boss battles, many of which contain quick time events.
As in its predecessor Resident Evil 4, players can upgrade weapons with money and treasure collected in-game and heal themselves with herbs, but cannot run and shoot at the same time. New features include infected enemies with guns and grenades, the ability to upgrade weapons at any time from the inventory screen without having to find a merchant, and the equipping of weapons and items in real-time during gameplay. Each player can store nine items. Unlike the previous games, the item size is irrelevant; a herb or a grenade launcher each occupy one space, and four items may be assigned to the D-pad. The game also features fewer puzzles than previous titles.
Resident Evil 5 Review
When Resident Evil 5 launched, I avoided buying it. I thought the direction of the series was headed in the wrong direction. I said to myself “co-op?!? colorful bright lighting!?!?” and basically dismissed the game for a few months. I forget the reasons, but six months later I finally picked it up. I played the game single player, finished it, and never really fell in love with it. I was indifferent about the game.
A month or so later and I decided to play it co-op with a guy I met on some forums, who happens to be one of the biggest RE fans I’ve ever met. He has already played the crap out of RE5, so he has a ton of game knowledge about RE5. I wanted to get the Platinum (PS3), so we played on Professional, which is the very hard setting in the game. This time, I completely got it. Everything about the co-op experience was extremely fun! This game ended up being the co-op game I always wanted as a kid growing up. Teamwork was important (especially on hard settings), and playing with friends added a brand new experience to a series I already loved.
Finding all the treasures, upgrading weapons, and the constant high pressure of action horror was extremely fun, challenging, and rewarding. Top that off with some great boss fights, and some extremely good story with some of Resident Evil’s best characters. Even the QTE’s in this game were fun in co-op! They didn’t feel out of place, and if you failed them with your buddies, it always ended up being a laughing affair, especially the next time when they mixed the buttons up on you!
The game didn’t have that dark setting of the previous titles, but it still had its own mood and unqiue setting. As I mentioned above, this game had an excellent co-op system. The combos you could perform with your partner added a welcomed mechanic to the series, expanding on 4’s action prompts. The boss battles worked really well with your partners too, both of you generally had to work together and do something unique together to end the boss. Wesker in this game was particullarly bad ♥♥♥ too.
Anyway, I could go on and on about how RE5 is great, yeah it’s not survival horror, but it’s a fantastic action horror game, and one of the greatest co-op experiences I’ve had in gaming period.
