Resident Evil 7

Resident Evil 7 biohazard is the next major entry in the renowned Resident Evil series and sets a new course for the franchise as it leverages its roots and opens the door to a truly terrifying horror experience. A dramatic new shift for the series to first person view in a photorealistic style powered by Capcom’s new RE Engine, Resident Evil 7 delivers an unprecedented level of immersion that brings the thrilling horror up close and personal.

Set in modern day rural America and taking place after the dramatic events of Resident Evil® 6, players experience the terror directly from the first person perspective. Resident Evil 7 embodies the series’ signature gameplay elements of exploration and tense atmosphere that first coined “survival horror” some twenty years ago; meanwhile, a complete refresh of gameplay systems simultaneously propels the survival horror experience to the next level.

The player controls Ethan Winters from a first-person perspective as he searches the Baker house for his missing wife. Although Ethan is a civilian with few combat skills, he is able to arm himself with a variety of weapons including handguns, shotguns, flamethrowers, explosives and chainsaws against the Baker family and a humanoid form of fungus known as the “Molded”. He can also block attacks to reduce damage. Various sections of the game are spent being pursued by members of the Baker family, who, if engaged in combat, can only be temporarily incapacitated. However, these encounters are avoidable by means of stealth, or running away.

Unlike Resident Evil 5 and Resident Evil 6, the gameplay emphasizes horror and exploration over action. The inventory uses a grid-based system with an initial capacity of 12 slots, but may be expanded several times over the course of the game. An item can occupy up to two spaces, and four items may be assigned to the D-pad. Item boxes found in save rooms may also be used to manage and store items, and can be retrieved from different item boxes for later use. Items in the inventory can be used, examined, or combined with other items to increase their usefulness. Many of the game’s puzzles require that items be examined under certain conditions in order to reveal secrets. Tape recorders can be used to manually save the game’s progress, which, depending on the given difficulty level, may require the use of a cassette tape. Videotapes are scattered for Ethan to find, which place the player in the perspective of a different character, often revealing plot information or clues needed to solve a puzzle. The PlayStation 4 version is playable in virtual reality using the PlayStation VR headset.

Resident Evil 7 Review

Resident Evil 7 is a fantastic entry in the Resident Evil series, and is a must own for fans of the classic survival horror games (before 4). I say this as someone who was very hesitant to purchase this game because all I had seen from the marketing was PT and other gimmicky horror games with little actual gameplay or substance. However, I am happy to say that this is not the case. Resident Evil 7 might be the best entry in the series since REmake.

The gameplay is really solid. Aside from a lengthy, scripted introductino that does get annoying to replay (I did 3 full playthroughs, one on each difficulty) the game rarely takes control away from you. Most of the time you will be wandering around the Baker property in search of resources, key items to progress, and making the choie to either kill or avoid the Molded enemies that stalk the halls. A fair bit of the game also involves hiding from the Baker family themselves, which is less than perfect. The game lacks any real stealth mechanics to make this a good system, and the Baker’s line of sight often makes little sense. Additionally, they tend to teleport around for the sake of bothering you, no matter how immersion breaking it is.

The gunplay is solid, and on Normal difficulty you will find ammo is given generously enough to keep you always armed, but also on the edge of being defensless if you are wasteful. The Shotguns are particularly powerful, as always, and will make short work of the Molded. Most of the puzzles are pretty simple, and this game has a number involving rotating weird objects to create shadows on walls that open doors. Makes about as much sense as any other puzzle in this series. However, there is one particularly good puzzle during the latter part of the game that has a great twist to it. The boss fights are sort of hit and miss here, as one is great fun, one simply goes on for too long (even on easy), and one seems virtually impossible on Madhouse difficulty without using some unlockable items.

Resident Evil 7 feels like Resident Evil, and the only difference is that this game is in First-Person. While I was initially agaisnt this idea, RE7 makes me excited to see what other possibilities we can expect from future installments. I definitely recommend that anyone reading this far (thanks btw) purchase this game, if perphas at a discount. For me, 20 hours doens’t quite justify a $60 price tag (soon to be $85 with DLC). I feel that $30 is a fair price for this game as someone who likes my hours to match my dollars, but the sheer enjoyment I got out of this game is probably worth more. Regardless of how much you pay, Resident Evil 7 is not to be missed.

Summary
RE7 ends just as it starts to outstay its welcome, and after the fact, I felt like I'd survived a truly harrowing journey. The boss fights may be slightly inconsistent and certain sections might drag after a while, but RE7 is still a remarkable success.
