Ryse Son of Rome Review

For a 6 hour game (single player campaign without obsessing over collectibles) it is pretty good. I am not even sure that I would have wanted it to be longer because, the way it is, I am fairly sure that it would have stopped being fun relatively soon after 10-12 hours or so because it does get repetitive.

Combat is quick-time-ish – for best results tenderize the enemy a bit, then use finishers with the correct combination of left and right clicks as suggested by the blue-yellow color code. Dodge or attempt perfect parry on red color code. Repeat. That being said, it does look and feel badass. Still, you fight the axe/sword guy (who may or may not have a bow when you are far away), the axe/sword and shield guy, the big burly guy, the dual-wielder or a combination of some or all of the above. Even the bosses are slightly more challenging versions of one of the types I just mentioned. It does the job for up to 10 hours, I guess, but it was well on its way to getting old by the time I was done with it.

The story is really good. No complaints there.

The visuals are stunningly gorgeous. Voice acting and cinematic animations are top notch too. It does drop FPS quite a bit every once in a while which is particularly bad during the quick-time events when you miss the correct combination because the screen was stuttering, but the game was still awaiting the correct input in real time. My rig is pretty powerful and does not complain about many games, if ever, but it very much underperformed with this one. Not all the time. Just, you know, when it mattered.

I think it is worth the full price of about 20 Euro, but just barely because it is kind of short, especially if you are a single-player-only kind of person, so there may be some buyer’s remorse for some people. However, I do recommend grabbing it on sale when available.
