Six Ages Ride Like the Wind

Six Ages Ride Like the Wind

Life between myths. Lead your clan into legend or obscurity. Six Ages: Ride Like the Wind is a storybook strategy game, immersing you in a land of old gods and magic.

Hundreds of small encounters build into an epic, multi-generational tale of survival and inter-clan alliances. Six Ages is the spiritual successor to acclaimed King of Dragon Pass, taking place thousands of years earlier in the same shared world of Glorantha. Part role-playing, part resource management, you’ll always be making decisions with long-term consequences, for you and your clan.

  • Design your own clan, visit the gods, become respected, raid your neighbors’ cows
  • Over 400 interactive story scenes, with deep simulation systems driving their appearance and outcomes
  • Multiple difficulty levels, and the option for Iron Willed players to limit reloading
  • Gorgeous hand-painted high-resolution illustrations
  • Same world as King of Dragon Pass, but a new clan: the Riders, with their own myths, and 4x more world to explore
  • Discover, appease, and make deals with spirits in your territory

Glorantha is a highly detailed Bronze Age world, similar in many ways to our own. But it exists in a magical universe where the laws of physics are subordinate to the whims of the gods and spirits. To understand Glorantha, leave our mundane world and enter the world of myth. The Sun is a living god, not a nearby star. Countless gods exist, some even more powerful than the Sun, and all have the power to directly affect humanity.

In Six Ages, you play specifically as a Riders clan, who revere various gods in their particular mythology, including Gamari the Horse Mother, and your culture hero, Hyalor… but you would be foolish to forget Raven the Trickster. He has not forgotten you.

Glorantha is also the setting of other rich narrative games/experiences, including King of Dragon Pass, HeroQuest, RuneQuest, God Wars, and others.

Six Ages Ride Like the Wind Review

After playing for an hour, this is already bringing back great memories of its spiritual predecessor, King of Dragon Pass.

The game is rooted firmly in the mythology of the classic RPG setting RuneQuest and the world of Glorantha; with this game being set in and around the mythic time of the early mortal races. The names and places will feel both strangely familiar and intriguingly different to those who are familiar with the setting; and to those who are new to Glorantha, hopefully fun and immersive to the magical bronze age aesthetic.

The game plays as both a barbarian clan management simulator, as well as an emergent story generator. You will have to keep track of your clans ability to feed itself, stave off your enemies, battle dark and dangerous supernatural forces and learn more about the new lands you clan has settled. The UI is a definite improvement over KoDP, with the tutorials making the learning curve much less steep, though it still may feel a little clunky to people who have never played a game quite like this.

The art work is superb. With the game’s many events each boasting bespoke art pieces that evoke the feeling of the setting. The music is likewise appropriate and thematic, changing subtly depending on the type of event that you are dealing with. As a primarily narrative game, the writing is naturally very strong; with heaps of painstakingly written prose that captures the feel of Glorantha’s mythic age.

As the game makes clear on its title page, Six Ages isn’t a game that is there to be solved, it is to be experienced. Go into it knowing that you will make mistakes and maybe even fail in the long run; but your next play through will be better and unique every time you go back.
