Sonic Forces
In Sonic Forces, the evil Dr. Eggman has conquered much of the world with help from a powerful and mysterious new villain named Infinite. Now, you must assist Sonic and build an army to reclaim the world as they fight against chaos and destruction. Defeat enemies with blazing speed as Modern Sonic, catapult past perilous platforms as Classic Sonic, and create your very own Custom Hero Character equipped with a variety of powerful gadgets. Experience fast-paced action with these three unique gameplay styles, explore iconic stages, plus, fight across unique added content with Shadow as a playable character!
The game is split into several themed levels, some of which are based on locations from past games, such as Green Hill Zone. Players must complete each level while fighting waves of enemies, and (with the exception of Classic Sonic) seamlessly shift from side-scrolling to third-person perspectives. Stages are filled with features such as spring boards, rails, and boost pads, and obstacles such as spikes, bottomless pits, and robots. Scattered around levels are golden rings, which serve as a form of health: rings protect players from damage caused by robots or other hazards, though they lose their rings upon being hit; being hit with no rings kills the player. The game does not use a traditional life system, instead deducting from the player’s score depending on the number of deaths. Players are given a grade dependent on their performance; an “S” rank is the best and a “C” is the worst. Certain levels feature a boss, which must be defeated in order to proceed. Bonus levels can be unlocked by collecting Red Rings hidden in most stages and players may occasionally receive SOS Missions, tasking them with replaying levels with a specific objective.
Sonic Forces Review
Gameplay-wise, it’s intuitive and responsive, (when you actually play it… you’ll find that about 30% of the time, the game “plays itself”), this however, does not apply to sonic 2d, which is by far the worst part of the entire game, 2d platforming feels awful, especially since sonic mania came out a bit before this one (actually, why is there even old sonic here? Mania is all we need).
Good bit though, and the saving grace, customization! I did not want this, I actually was not gonna buy it because of it, but, actually, it’s really well made and thought out, a lot of clothes, acessories, different weapons to suit your playstyles and making experiments with gameplay.
If you get in for the story, you won’t find much, alot of levels, most of them different in design, some redesigns here and there, pretty much every level can be beaten in less than 2 or 3 minutes, though you can replay them for collectibles and leaderboards.
Will recommend because I’ve enjoyed it, and probably will get back to it once or twice more, but with a warning, wait for a sale, play to have fun, don’t take it seriously, and especially, get Sonic Mania first!
Edit – Sonic’s voice actor here was top notch, really well played, characterization was on point.
