Sudden Strike 4

Sudden Strike 4

Sudden Strike 4 is back! The beloved Real Time Strategy series returns, this time with bigger battlefields, more units, better graphics, new scenarios and legendary commanders with individual abilities – all of which makes Sudden Strike 4 more tactical and realistic than ever before!

Experience some of the fiercest battles of the South-East Asian campaign of World War II like never before. The “The Pacific War” add-on for Sudden Strike 4 throws you right into the conflict between the Allied Forces and the Imperial Japanese Army. Lead the Japanese forces on to invade Singapore, the British military stronghold in South Asia and take over strategically important targets. Maneuver a major naval engagement during the battle of Santa Cruz and disrupt the enemy by using an array of naval and aerial units. Relive the largest amphibious assault of the Pacific War, as you hold your ground on the Ryukyu Islands in the Battle of Okinawa. Take command of the Allied Forces during the first major offensive against the Empire of Japan in Guadalcanal, up until the fierce battle of Iwo Jima. Choose from 6 new highly decorated generals, such as Douglas MacArthur and Richard J. Marshall, and control large battleship units for the first time in the series.

Features:

  • Sudden Strike 4: The Pacific War features two new campaigns with a total of 10 missions based on the South-East Asian campaign of World War II.
  • Six new doctrine commanders to choose from: on the side of the Imperial Japanese Army, new commanders include navy admiral Soemu Toyoda and Commander of the Southern Expeditionary Army Group, Hisaichi Terauchi. On the Allies side, your options now include the likes of legendary five-star general Douglas MacArthur or Chief of Staff Richard J. Marshall.
  • The Pacific War add-on brings new gameplay features to Sudden Strike, such as flame throwers, amphibious vehicles, large controllable aircraft carriers, advanced air combat as well as new unit skills.
  • Sudden Strike 4: The Pacific War introduces 51 new vehicle units, including the Amtrac LTV(A)-4, USS Enterprise CV-6, Soko Sagyo Ki (SS-KI) and Shokaku aircraft carrier.

Sudden Strike 4 Review

I’m a long time fan of the Sudden Strike series. This is a very, very, good game but it is not a Sudden Strike game.

This game’s missions restrict you between four red lines until you quickly achieve some small mission goals against some small enemy squads, then it lets you play in another section of the map while you beat some more enemy squads, then it lets you play in the rest of the map with a few more men and machines. It’s a great formula for a squad based game, but for along time fan of Sudden Strike 1&2, this is not a Sudden Strike game.

I can’t help feeling a little disappointed that the freedom of movement, the need to organise a massive army into a cohesive battle machine, the onging battle against impossible odds, and the tactics needed to win through sheer ‘grind’ have effectively been removed. I also really miss the little things like racing to get the best artillery pieces before your AI ally gets it, or to put men into forward buildings with their attack turned off to increase your defensive vision, or to retreat immediately to save your army from immediate annihilation.

I would have preferred that they release it under an entriely new name, promoting it as coming from the studio that created Sudden Strike, even being built upon the legacy of Sudden Strike. I will get my money’s worth of entertainment from it once I’ve fully adjusted to viewing it as ‘something else’. So I’ll heartily recommend it for fans of squad based games. But it is simply no longer a ‘Sudden Strike’ game.

Summary
I think this game could've been better if there was a way to recruit units, force enemies out of their tanks, a way to heal tank HP regardless of the tree, more thoughts given to the balances, etc. Hiding the "3 star" mission scoring mechanic until a campaign replay would make people feel less impulse to have to grind the mission.
Bad

Great
Storyline is a great touch with mission - 8.1
Some tactical thinking required - 8
Good vision and damage mechanics - 8.2
