Like previous installments in the Tales series, Tales of Symphonia consists primarily of three major areas: an overworld field map, town and dungeon maps, and a battle screen. The overworld map is a 3D model, featuring a scaled-down version of the game’s fictional world which the player travels through to reach the game’s locations. As with preceding games in the series, the world map can be traversed by foot, on the party’s quadrupedal pet Noishe, and on flying vehicles known as Rheairds. On field maps, characters are directed across realistically scaled environments. The battle screen is a 3D representation of an area, in which the player commands the characters in battles against CPU-controlled enemies.
Tales of Symphonia Review
I thought that 13 years on, after playing the Elder Scrolls series, Witcher 3 and all manner of Final Fantasy games, that I would find it difficult to return to Tales of Symphonia and replay a classic from my childhood. But I found it to be surprisingly immersive and enjoyable, not once did I feel like I was just pressing through trying to get through it for the sake of completion.
The storyline is my favorite thing about this game, I absolutely love sinister yet beautiful narratives with deep character arks and hints of romance, and this game hit that nail on the head. The combat is very fun, you have lots of options to customize it throughout the game, and on top of that you can play as different characters you meet too. The soundtrack is okay, some of the best tracks are towards the end of the game.
Now onto some criticisms. The thing I hate most about this game is its back and forth elements. I have been infuriated countless times with how time consuming the puzzles are in Dungeons. You will find yourself saying “What in the name of Martel were the developers thinking with this?”. This isn’t some Legend of Zelda style dungeon tediousness, no, this is a whole new level of ebola to which the likes have never been seen… even by Final Fantasy Ten.
In conclusion, you should absolutely buy this game if you have a small amount of money to spare and a love for adventure games like this. With the amount of hours you’re likely to put into this game, you’re getting more than your moneys worth.
