Toukiden 2

Toukiden 2

Toukiden 2! Slayers! Go forth and eradicate the Oni menace! Experience the latest hunting action game featuring a dynamic targeted destruction system!

The latest installment in the hunting action series “Toukiden”. From the battlefield to the village that serves as your base of operations, the game takes place in a vast “open world”. Explore the vast world for yourself, and enjoy hunting action from an entirely new perspective. New to the Toukiden series, the element of Control is also empowered by Mitama, which specialises in summoning Oni to fight for the player. Mitama grow and develop during battles. In order to increase the levels of your Boosts, you must meet the upgrade conditions of each Boost and have sufficient proficiency with them. The upgrade conditions differ for each Mitama and Boost. Each Mitama can learn up to nine Boosts, but you can only equip three of them at a time.

The game’s setting takes place two years after Kiwami. In Toukiden 2, players will assume the mantle of a mysterious Slayer who has awakened after a ten-year slumber to a world shrouded in darkness. As revealed in Toukiden: The Age of Demons, humanity was protected for centuries by a secret clan of warriors, the Slayers, trained to dispose of the supernatural threat before it could consume the world. An event known as the Awakening caused rifts to appear in space and time – resurfacing places that had long disappeared from the world and unleashing swarms of Oni that relentlessly hunted humans. Koei Tecmo published an anime short as a prequel to the game, the animation was handled by Studio 4°C and it was directed by Takahiro Tanaka.

Defeating Oni will free souls of fallen heroes known as Mitama, who are based on Japanese historical figures and can be utilised to power-up your character, weapons, armour and the Demon Hand.

Toukiden 2 Review

This is a game with a decently long story and a grindy/repetative post game with multiplayer. Your enjoyment will be directly proportional to if you enjoy fighting large monsters for 3-10 minutes while grinding better gear. The change up from the formula is the Demon Hand which allows you to not only quickly rapelle towards opponents and climb certain walls, but to also perform a limb shattering attack. The game is a bit faster paced than monster hunter, at least from the couple I have played. This game is very steeped in Japanese culture and lore.

Story and characters are reasonably okay. Story, specifically, is enjoayble and not offensively dumb. Big bad’s end goal is over the top, but what do you expect in a game where you fight giant Demons? The assortment of characters is alright, but some are forgetable. Some of them are just “there” to fill holes in weapon representation and don’t get much character development or backstory. None of the characters are overtly offensive in terms of annoying personality, which often is a rare thing to say.

Though I enjoyed the game, the post game wore me out a bit. It needed more of a carrot on a stick for that aspect of the game (new areas would have been nice).

With all the above said, though, it was a decent enough game. It’s not worth full AAA game price, but for two/thirds that it’s a “maybe” if you are looking for something Monster Hunter-y before World comes out. Lack of Multiplayer story progression hurts the game, but if you want a decent single player experience with the occasional mission with friends maybe get it on sale.

Summary
What seems at first glance like a fairly standard genre game, Toukiden 2 ultimately offers an interesting setting, imaginative creature designs, story- and exploration-driven gameplay, and unique combat elements. While its flaws are obvious, it’s not hard to forgive them when you’re in the heat of battle, chopping off a hellish spider-demon’s legs one by one and watching its life force disappear with every slash, shot, and punch.
