River City Girls Review

Where to even begin… I have been a fan of the Kunio-Kun series since 2014 when I found River City Ransom for the NES, and have been absolutely enthralled with River City Girls, the latest title in the series. I could spend hours upon hours explaining all my feelings for the game, but here is a quick overview:

The visuals are absolutely gorgeous and the fluid animations further back up its fantastic beat-’em-up gameplay. Likewise, the characters play off of each other so well, it makes the experience even more captivating for a game with a seemingly sub-par plot on the outside. All of this combined strengthens the replay value, since you can play the game on a harder difficulty with more characters to play as, each with their own unique movesets and combos, whilst still keeping all of your items and stats from the previous playthrough.

However, the default controls for PC users like me were very frustrating and horrendous, as all of the keys were crammed together and made it extremely awkward to get the hang of. This wouldn’t be such a big deal, but that is not to mention the lack of a remap setting, forcing you to use the defaults. After a while, you will eventually get used to the controls and see that it is much like an arcade fight stick, which may be intended or not. Likewise, finding specific recruits like the nightmare variants to fill out the pages takes an eternity sometimes, having to wait in the same room for hours on end to even get one to spawn.

Overall, River City Girls is an amazingly fun beat-’em-up you can play with your friends or even solo like I did. Its quirky nature and nostalgia towards the previous games in the series really push it forward as my favorite game in the series, and maybe my favorite game on steam in general. Sure it has a few hiccups here and there, but no game is perfect, which is why I’m giving River City Girls a 10/10. I’d recommend this game to those who enjoy simple beat-’em-ups with fun and interesting mechanics, and those that would like a simple, but challenging casual experience and delve into the River City and Kunio-Kun series.
