SCUM

SCUM

SCUM! The world’s unquenchable need for entertainment has turned towards bloodlust as entertainment behemoth TEC1 is set to premiere season two of its television sensation SCUM. This new season moves the contest from the rugged, enclosed indoor arenas to the lush forests, rolling fields, and rugged terrains of TEC1’’s own private SCUM Island. Both fan favorites and new prisoners will clash in a ruthless war of survival while battling for the support of viewers, producers, and corporate sponsors for fame, gifts, and a chance of life after death.

SCUM aims to evolve the multiplayer open world survival game with unprecedented levels of character customization, control and progression, where knowledge and skills are the ultimate weapons for long-term survival. Combining the methodical planning and management of hardcore survival with optional PvP ‘network events’ available to everyone at anytime, SCUM strikes a unique balance between complex simulation and intense action in the next generation of survival game.

SCUM is built with Unreal Engine 4 and will expand throughout the Early Access period.

SCUM REVIEW

Despite being exhausted with that type of experience, SCUM is fantastic. It’s still very much an Early Access title but the gameplay is polished, bugs are few and far between and there’s a solid foundation here that will only get better.  Gameplay-wise, the basics are the same as every other open-world survival on the market: loot and craft your way from zero to hero. The lore and background on the other hand is rather unique. Everyone is a prisoner, thrown into this arena as punishment. Drones fly around and film the prisoners as some sort of sadistic television programme for people on the outside. Currently, all the drones do is film you for a while and make you soil yourself in fright, but the developers have hinted at an ominous purpose in the future.

Aside from the reality TV gist of things, the goal is to survive and right now, there’s not really an end-game. PvP is enabled so other players can be a serious threat. However, if you’re on a fairly unpopulated server, the bigger worries come in the form of zombies. They can be found near every place of interest, whether it’s a farmhouse, seaside village or military compound. They’re not particularly tricky to take down though, and the simplistic melee combat system means a quick swing with your melee weapon of choice, or your fists, followed by a step back to avoid their counter-attack, should see you winning a war of undead attrition.

Okay, some final words before the conclusion, is the game worth 17 euros? Nooooopeeeee, unless! Unless you have friends to play it with and you don’t find any friends to play with, ingame, after the first 8 hours, you’ll probably get bored of it. I got armed to the teeth on a few servers, AKs 2 shots most of the people if you shoot them in the head, and it’s just, not fun anymore after this point. If you LOVE zombie survival games and you don’t want to spend 30 EU on Rust or DayZ, this game is for you. It’s fun, its different, killing zombies isn’t too hard, however, stay away from towns, loot there isn’t worth it, only worth thing is a bloody pitchfork and a backpack if you can find one. Takes up to 2h approximately to meet up with your friends, after you find a server you can both see and you have to explain where you are on the map since towns and bases don’t have names (some secret bunkers/tunnels should remain nameless, however, please name the towns or at least the roads). Now, I’m not hating on the game, I just think its too hard, in some ways. I bet somebody will be like “Just learn how to play skrub” but really, for real, I love this game, I want it to succeed, and there are people like me and my friends who just want to play a survival game without dying before we get to meet each other and our character saying “I’m hungry” every 2 bloody ♥♥♥♥ing minutes. I’d love to see an option to “Invite a friend” or “Spawn as a squad” instead of wasting 5 hours looking for each other. Is the game fun? Yes. Is the game balanced? Depends. Are zombies easy to kill? Yes. Are mechs easy to avoid? Yes. Is PVP fun? Yes. Are the events any good? Yes. Is the game worth it at its current stage? Yes and no.

Conclusion. Game has actually decent mechanics, desync isnt terrible unless you’re using a kitchen board, finding food is a problem, going to military bases gets you a lot of loot right away, there are a lot of zombies/puppets and mechs as well as players in the way, so be careful, finding your friends is a pain in the ♥♥♥♥♥ building bases is fun until you forget where it was located and you can’t find it, so is the game worth it? Actually, it is. I don’t regret spending a single dime on this game. Altho 16 hours (at this moment) I really REALLY like the game, I find it enjoyable and unlike other games, here people don’t actually kill bambis. If you’re a fresh spawn, youre most likely going to survive. I haven’t encountered any cheaters and I hope I don’t, I get armed and ready to go in 3-4 hours at most (takes time to find everything you need) and I’ve a base set up somewhere in the woods.

Summary
SCUM could very well be the next big thing. It’s seen immense growth on Twitch and social media channels in the few days since it launched and for good reason. Despite being in early access, the package you get is solid, albeit a little bare. This is one to watch. If you're into zombie survival games, this is the game for you. It's a lot better than Infestation(F2P) and its a lot cheaper than DayZ, it's got a lot of potential, so yes, go for it. Gl & hf!
