Stoneshard Prologue Review

Stoneshard: Prologue is a promising start to a fantastic roguelite RPG. I really enjoy the UI which is taken directly from Diablo2 , although Stoneshard is a turn-based experience. It even has a lot of survival elements like eating food and consuming random potions, gives me some Divine Divinity vibes. While it is not exactly original formula, Stoneshard is a relatively complex game in comparison. It has a very strong “risk vs reward” aspect which gives the game a lot of decision making. You have to maintain your hunger, thirst, wounds and many other status effects. The gameplay is challenging to say the least. Each level is randomly generated so you never know how bad the things will get. Ten minutes into the game some regular enemies could beat your ♥♥♥ 1vs1, this game does not screw around; that 5 minutes of tutorial is all you going to get before diving head first into the pits of hell.

The game shines when it comes to variety of mechanics. In general the environment provides a lot of opportunities which allow you to make some hard decisions. If you have no key to open that door and you want to break it, you might get a bone fracture in the process ;). If you are starving and want to eat that spoiled fish, well you might get a food poisoning. You can engage enemies directly or find a way to sneak up on them. RPG elements include things like experience gain, stat upgrades, random loot, spells and status effects. Aside from having a solid core gameplay, it is not a bad looking game either; the pixel animation is above average and the armor changes your appearance. Even the voice acting was competent.

Stoneshard has a solid gameplay foundation, I might get the full game depending on the amount of content. I am personally not looking for that unforgiving difficulty so I hope we can get 2 modes. Don’t get me wrong, I can beat any game but these days I just don’t have the patience. Most of all, I just really like its nostalgic aspect that reminds me games like Diablo and Beyond Divinity.
