The Solus Project Review

Excellent game, one of my new favorites for exploration/puzzles in first person. The storyline moves really well, the graphics and textures are on point. The first ten minutes can be a little daunting as you understand how to combine items and how the game’s flow is going to be but after that it carries onward. If you aren’t interested in storylines you might not find this as good just from a puzzle perspective. There’s no combat at any point, either. It plays a little like Amnesia but somehow feels like Portal 2 in terms of the atmosphere. I haven’t found nearly all the locations and “secrets” that are in the game yet, as I was driven to complete it and understand the full story. The story itself is something unique and interesting, not much can be said about it without giving too much away though.

The controls all made sense and managing health/thirst/hunger/sleep seems daunting at first but is manageable once you realize where the game is going to put resources for you. The only bug I encountered was with the inventory. Sometimes the inventory would disappear when you move your mouse and you’d have to do this multiple times before you could actually switch items. You can use the keyboard to do this too, but in some situations time was of the essence.

The only negative part of the game is the male protagonist’s voice acting. It’s just terrible all-around. The quality of the voice isn’t the issue as much as his acting, which is disjointed and awkward sounding. The character speaks probably less than ten times throughout the game, giving short audio diaries to send home that you listen to, but each time given the circumstances he’s in at the moment his attitude and demeanor is entirely inappropriate which draws from the immersion of the game. I’d say his acting is on par with a high school theater student. Even without a change to the script, replacing his lines with a more capable voice actor would carry the game a lot further in the long run. I’m not sure how the female voice is, but I will try that option for my next playthrough.

Summary
The Solus Project tries to bring story and survival together in an engaging way, but it ultimately falters in this attempt. It has moments of wonder, but they're divided by what is mostly monotonous wandering from place to place. It's a disappointing game with a lot of missed potential, and it doesn't convey a good story or the rewarding feeling of surviving against the elements.
