Trials of the Blood Dragon

Trials of the Blood Dragon

Discover an epic single player experience with the unique combination of competitive, precise, physics-based Trials gameplay- and rather less precise gun toting, balls swinging, neon-drenched Blood Dragon action. Journey through a colorful story with warzones in Vietnam, settling scores in Miami, confronting TV heroes in Tokyo and the odd detour into Space. Hell, you’re gonna go to Hell and back. The future is back. Are you ready?

In Trials of the Blood Dragon, the player takes on the role of Roxanne and Slayter, the children of cyber-commando Rex “Power” Colt and Doctor Darling from the original Blood Dragon game. With Rex dead and their mother missing, the kids have to swing into action to save America and the world.

This spinoff of the Trials series adds some wrinkles to the tried-and-true motorcycle gameplay, incorporating two-stick platforming sections, jetpack missions, shooting and even some stealth to keep the game feeling fresh. Naturally, the whole thing is drenched in 80s retro-futurism, with nods to Saturday morning cartoons and the Power Rangers as well as classics like Indiana Jones or Big Trouble in Little China as well as modern 80s-inspired works like Hotline Miami.

Like the first Blood Dragon game, Trials of the Blood Dragon is a retro-styled spinoff that will appeal to fans of the main series’ action-packed gameplay. It isn’t a game that players will return to over and over, but it should provide some colourful, fast-paced entertainment, and the over-the-top 80s aesthetic adds a layer of fuzzy neon charm. If you’ve ever thought that the ultimate monster-fighting weapon is obviously a dirtbike, this is the game for you.

Trials of the Blood Dragon Review

I want to say out of the gate that a I think it is very unjustified and unfair to give this game negative reviews for not being a Trials Fusion clone, additionally, these complaints are coming from people with less that 30 minutes in game. Trials of the Blood Dragon like Far Cry 3: Blood Dragon was never intended to be a successor or continuation of the parent game. If you were expecting that you should look elsewhere because you will likely be disappointed. Aside from similar gameplay mechanics Trials of the blood Dragon like Far Cry 3: Blood Dragon was supposed to be a fun departure from the main game and I believe that is exactly what they have done.

I went into this game expecting what I got from Far Cry 3: Blood Dragon, which was an absolutely ridiculous, over the top, stylized, comedic parody of 80s video games and action films, and that is exactly what I got. The game features anther excellent soundtrack from Power Glove which really compliments the exaggerated 80s style of the game. In addition to the new look Trials of the Blood Dragon adds new gameplay mechanics such as shooting from your bike and on foot segments. For some people these new additions may be a hit or a miss since it is a departure from what fans of previous trials games have come to expect. The bottom line is that if you go into this game expecting a Trials reskin you are going to be disappointed, for the price you get a lot of content and style for what you are paying for. Fans of Far Cry 3: Blood Dragon and its over the top 80s look should feel right at home with Trials of the Blood Dragon.

Summary
As with other Trials games, Trials of the Blood Dragon demands frequent replays if you want to get the best rankings and unlockable items. There’s no shortage of goodies to collect, like extra costumes, but the stages are varied enough to be inviting all on their own without the promise of rewards. You will have to contend with boredom during a few unremarkable levels, but the game's fun, mind-boggling stages leave the strongest impression. Whatever mad genius decided to smash the two series together should be commended: the mix is mostly a successful one, and where it fails, it’s at least failure in favor of trying something new.
